A Rich Internet Application (RIA) is a combination of the positives of desktop applications & web based applications. They provide an interactive user experience available in desktop applications with an added advantage of low cost of development & widespread reach of web applications. Whenever a request for a Rich Internet Application is received from the user, the requested page is loaded in the browser. Any further requests made by the user, within the same page, do not require reloading of the page again & only the portions affected by the request are reloaded. In the process, RIA typically transfers the processing necessary for the user interface to the web client but keeps the bulk of the data (i.e. maintaining the state of the program, the data etc) back on the application server.

Various new applications can be developed through Rich Internet Applications that seem impossible with traditional web technologies. They can be used to simplify complex processes like registration, online shopping and data analysis. RIAs can be effectively used to provide an engaging and interactive experience to customers or managers. RIAs can also be made to work with existing web application infrastructure and small modules can be deployed even as part of normal HTML pages.
